Employee Spotlight: Tanner Fujii, Sales Consultant & Parking Revenue Management Expert @ Ocra

What’s your personal journey to becoming a sales professional?

I can talk about this one in in depth, but I’ll make it quick!

So, I’ve been doing karate since I was 9 years old.

As I started competing, I developed a hunger for hard work, seeing the results of my hard work, and achieving results and goals set for myself.

I was able to compete there until I transitioned into kickboxing. I won a junior world title in 2006, then won another in 2008, and then moved into mixed martial arts.

Out of high school, I was living and training with the best professional fighters in the state of Colorado. These were incredible athletes, training three times a day, six days a week, and working through injury – all to get better.

I believe the work ethic and the good qualities from my stint as a mixed martial artist carried over into sales.

What was your first sales job?

My first entry-level sales position was at HomeAdvisor.

I had to learn how to pitch, how to conduct myself as an outside sales rep in the truest sense, how to read from a script, how to overcome objections, how to disarm aggressive prospects, and how to move into a close – all on one call, in a perfect world.

Sometimes I’d run into people I had to disarm contractors who were frustrated because they’d been in our systems for years and years and called forty times by other reps to get the deal done.

But I was able to do that pretty regularly and successfully and consistently achieve quota, which I took to my first Account Executive position at HotelEngine.

What was that like, moving from an SDR role into Account Executive?

It was my first time managing the full sales cycle.

I think from there, that’s where the true growth really happens – seeing everything come into play, learning how to prospect, manage clients, manage deals, while also expanding and finding new business and retaining existing business.

So, HotelEngine is really where I honed in on everything and learned how to take ownership.

What motivates you to excel?

I hate to lose more than I like to win, and I figure if I’m winning, I’m not losing, and I’m creating good outcomes for the company that I work for.

Through my athletic background, I’ve learned that if I can control everything that is within my control and work as hard as I can, that, my performance will always be indicative of that and be fruitful.

So, if the results aren’t what I want, and if I do not achieve goals or if I fall short, it wasn’t because of the actions that I took to prepare. I will never lose because of lack of preparation.

What accomplishments or projects are you especially proud of, either in work or life?

Professionally, I think I’m most proud of the my body of work so far since coming on board here at Ocra.

I’ve helped evaluate and implement new tools, facilitate new systems, bring on new business, and be a key part of a new and growing team.

Ocra is your introduction to the parking industry. Has there been anything that’s surprised you so far?

Actually, it’s funny, my very first job was a valet. So, it’s a full circle moment in a way!

But yes, the biggest surprise to me has been the entire park ‘n’ fly demographic. It’s a really robust and a super interesting niche.

Living in the Denver area where ride share is so prominent, I just thought, you know, everybody Ubers to the airport or has their friends drop them off and pick them up.

Park ‘n’ fly is on my radar for the first time since starting at Ocra, and it’s been really cool to see the inner workings of these programs and the demand that exists for them.

It’s been an outstanding experience getting involved in the parking industry. “Outstanding”, I think, is a powerful word that people don’t use often enough, so it’s a big part of my vocabulary.
